The Taxonomy is a unique alphanumeric code that is 10 characters in length. Taxonomy codes define the health care provider type, classification, and area of specialization. There codes are useful when you are applying for a National Provider Identifier, commonly referred to as NPI.
The 10-digit codes for each provider category are unique and contain no embedded logic. The codes and categories need to be used exactly as mentioned in the taxonomy list.
Provider Grouping is a major grouping of service(s) or occupation(s) of health care providers.
Classification is more specific service or occupation related to provider grouping.
It is the more specialized area of classification in which a provider wants to practice or provide services.
